I did this, this AM with PoofyHairyguys guide...

mstlyevil--- make sure in the windows behaviour section where you set windows translucency that you uncheck the box that says apply translucency to decoration only. this should make the whole window transparent. This is a cool trick but not very stable it seems (as promised) sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't, hurts the eyes after a bit too.

Been there, done that and got the t-shirt. I tried that for awhile but I found I like the window decorations becoming transparent better. I just love choices. \\:D/

I am still playing with the level of transluency I want. I hate that I have to reboot to get the new settings to apply.

It looks like I really need to get a nVidia card. All those screenshots with transparency look so nice..

And I'd love some shadows too. I even tried to get at least them working, but xcompmgr didn't work very well and kwin always tried to enable some transparency too and that makes a nice mess of my desktop :(

I love Ubuntu!!! I can use gui's for everything or I can use cli for everything. How's that for variety? In the screenshot below you'll see firefox opened to the ubuntuforums and rxvt running irssi (IRC client), elinks (text-mode tabbed web browser), bash (because I am a bash script freak) and Midnight Commander (cli file manager) all in screen with gkrellm over on the left. I even got the date and time in my screen bottom bar as well as a list of open screen windows. There are times that I like to log out of gnome and log into a tty and run everything I need, then there are times I like to have everything in a gui.

Ubuntu just ROCKS!

Just curious: Have you tried having the panel on the top like Mac instead of at the bottom like Windows? I recommend you give it a try. It reduces mouse movement by alot!

I have in just about all my other desktop varieties..I guess for me its still a throwback to being brought up on Windows :-k I still prefer to look at the bottom of the screen for my menus and stuff.

Six of one half a dozen of the other with a touchpad ;)

My desktop --very simple and not much has changed. Note the miles-wide system menu [in a corner, easy to hit even though it's incrediby small]

Using Cvs-built Xorg with Mesa and finally AGP+Acceleration for my Radeon card!
Some very modest transparency (just for show-off) and xcompmgr for niceness of compositing.

The desktop is grabbed off conceptart.

Its not really in the same league. One is just a new window manager, the other is another new x framework. But the time most people upgrade to Dapper some way to try it will be ready.

I was honestly kinda joking. I recommend Kwin for most people now.

Gandolf, how did you install gnome 2.13? The repo method posted on thier forums totally hosed my gnome and i had to go through and manually remove files the packages left behind. I think it was an issue with a gnome-applet, but I'm not sure as gnome would freeze as soon as it loaded.

The gnome2.13 was built by me but there was an issue about missing platform dependicies, anyway all was fixed now, it's on http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=18561 (You need testing enabled and have already an up & running Xorg 7 from testing oterwize it won't work)

cube is a 3d workspace plugin for compiz... it basically results in the effect of your desktops being part of a cube... and switching desktops flips faces... reaaly fast if you hold down the hotkeys..

I am. The only problem so far is that the download is taking very long. I think it's because some of the ports are firewalled.

Hey you know you can get rid of the tray icon for gdesklets by doing a --no-tray-icon option?

I have switched to gperfection2 with a dinosaur jr wallpaper. I like it like it like it, to quote Iggy Pop.

crossover office to be exact. I would rather use it because
A. It's easy and I like to use time wisely
B. The cash I spend for it goes directly to helping crossover and wine itself, unlike cedega or whatever its called for games.

it is just the side candy applets found by instsalling gdesklets-data . The colors have been changed to fit the background but that is just a rightclick on the applet so there is no need to really write a how-to.

e17 japan2006 theme with smoothjapan clearlooks. the icons are a mish-mash of still-life brushed, yasis and feng shui (i would really love a gnome icon theme with these icons) on the iconbar. the wall paper is from the e17 theme.

This is my latest creation. The machine displaying it is an old ibook

Ibook G3 300mhz
96mb of ram
whatever for video
12" screen
clamshell

The machine is actually acting as a thin client or xdmcp client rather to my server built out of an old compaq with more storage attached. and by old compaq i mean a p4 1.5ghz with 384mb of ram, 20gb hdd / partition and 120gb /home partition for all my downloads and backups from customers.

May not be as impressive the 200th time, but it still is pretty cool. Here is the famous cube and the "expose" tool ala Mac OS X.

It's utilitarian, I haven't applied very much eyecandy because too much gets in the way. So a lot of my desktop is fairly basic.

Using the following modifications:
Theme: Clearlooks2-Squared window border / Lighthouse Controls (http://www.gnome-look.org)
Icons: Tango (http://www.gnome-look.org)

50% transparency white taskbar at the top.
Panel Applets: 'Terminal', 'Run Application', and 'Weather Report' (all stock)
GDesklets: Sidecandy Weather, RSS-Grab (all stock)

Edit>Backgrounds and Emblems>click either Patterns or Colors>drag and drop to the nautilus bg. You can use diff colors or bg's with diff folders or choose one and with the dialog open, change to your home and computer dirs, or something and they will all use the same....you'll figure it out.
