im trying to set up a media center by installing ubuntu then installing xbmc as a profile and autobooting to that but for some reason neither xbmc or ubuntu will load a gui, i know it works because i already tested the computer with windows xp media edition. ive tried xbmc live 9.04.1, ubuntu 9.04 and ubuntu 8.04.3 ltd, none of these live cds would boot to gui after loading, also tried live usb method with no effect. anyone know what i can do to get this working?

hardware:
Pentium 4 2.66ghz
nvidia 5200 128meg 8xAGP
Dell Mobo (Dimension 4600CC)
DDr400 640MB ram
80GB IDE ATA HD

you mean to say, using xp everythign(GUI) is fine...but with ubuntu etc you are not able to get gui, right? btw can you paste your h/w details? it shouldn't be a driver issue...apart from the gui, does the rest of the thing work fine? like networking etc...

yes thats exactly what i mean, what happens is that ubuntu will start and do its little logon music then black screen, i left it running for aobut 10 minutes no change.
