Phone companies LOVE text messages, they clog up the tubes like less then half a second of voice, and they are expensive enough that people run up huge bills. :)

Many providers have a "texting plan" though, that if you text a lot you might pay something like 0.01 per message, or even unlimited. If your brother is into texting it might be worth buying.

this might sound stupid... but this reminds me of last month, while on vacation, i left my CDMA phone at home (use my GSM one while travelling)... and i get a lot of callers. i completely forgot to tell them i was on vacation. big mistake. everybody took turns leaving 5-10 minute voicemails and soon, they used up 200 minutes (my plan). when i got home, i found that i ran out of minutes. for this entire month. (because my plan allows 200 minutes/month but allows me to take some minutes from the next month to account for overuse) no callers for august i guess.

He can get an unlimited texting plan from virgin mobile for $20. Sometimes this is cheaper than turning a whole family plan into unlimited texting, especially if the rest of the family didn't use enough texts to justify it in the first place.
