Hi there,

I upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04 tonight and a username and password were requested after I restarted.

I never previously had a password login required when I started up. Regardless, I'm sure of my previous username and password anyway, and they're not working.

Why was I asked for login details at startup for the first time, and more to the point...any ideas how I can get around this?

Any advice is very, very gratefully received...this is a terribly frustrating one for me :( I really hope it's something straight forward and i'm just being a n00b.

Just googled and I would do as this guy suggests:

Or as some guy on the page suggests, just pick Recovery Mode and you will get get a root shell without messing with grub. :)

solved.

Ubuntu had reset to a German keyboard when it upgraded for some reason. (odd given, it was qwerty by default previously, and I only switched once as an experiment in 8.10 for a day months ago)

Now it has fully booted up its back to UK/US with the z and y the "normal" way round.

Odd and resolved by chance, but logged in now nonetheless. Thanks for your link.
