When I try to play AVI files with VLC, I get sound, but no picture, not even a blank window. AVIs play fine with other media players like Xine and Mplayer. I have ubuntu-restricted-extras installed, and have tried disabling Compiz, with no joy. I've also played around with the video output options under "Preferences".

Try checking the video preferences. I found that I had to change the Display output from "Default" to "OpenGL video output".

No, that didn't work.
