Hi,
I wish to upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10 but I don't have a working network at the moment. I have a 8.10 install CD but all the instructions I can find tell you to use the "alternate CD". Is
it possible to upgrade with the normal CD?

Hi, you will need to download the alternate cd, you cannot use the live cd to upgrade.

Thanks. I suspected this but I am puzzled why there is a need for two CDs.

The alternate cd is a text base installer, unlike the Live Desktop version you do not get the option to try before installing.
The live cd is good if you want to check that Ubuntu runs ok on your machine.
The alternate cd is good if you are installing on low end spec machines or want to do a upgrade.

I just think this is odd that the cdrom that anyone can request cannot be used for upgrades. In addition I don't think the documentation is clear enough about this.

I have raised a suggestion on brainstorm for this: http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/21037/

Back in the day you got a whole set of CD's. I believe you got every CD they had for that particular version. I see that is no longer the case.
