Programs you use and love

I am still somewhat new to linux/opensouse and it has been blowing my mind! I absolutly love the availability of software that is out there. Realizing the amount of programs out there I began to worry that I was missing out on something really good. So I was just wondering what programs you guys use on a daily basis. Recently I found out about F-Spot and I think its great, I have also been using the gimp some, Gaim, Evolution, OpenOffice, and Fire fox.

Anyway, let me know what you guys love!

Well, I have a few basics I start first when I boot my computer:

Evolution - for mail, contacts and calender
Firefox - my favorite browser
Liferea - a great feedreader. Can't live without RSS anymore... ;-)
GAIM - I use it for my ICQ and Jabber account

If I like to chat I start my X-Chat.

For graphics: GIMP and Inkscape

Hear my music with Amarok oder Beep-Media-Player

Put MP3s on my iPod nano: GTKPod

For uploading things via ftp: gFTP

Make HTML-Pages: bluefish

That's my basics. Certainly I use many more like OpenOffice, gedit, TVTime... and, and...

I would second the message above and add K3B for burning DVD/CD's and Grip for ripping MP3's. Also Easytag is pretty cool for cleaning up the filename/tags in your MP3 folder

for music, I prefer XMMS. its not a memory hog like amarok and it doesnt require a database to manage music. What I do is I tell it to play any music in such directory and it does just that.

as a windows manager, fluxbox. Again, not a memory hog like gnome or kde.
word processing-abiword. same reason as others.

can I change music from mp3 to a normal cd format with grip? there some jpop songs I have as mp3 but my g/f would like to listen to them on her cd player..

I use all the programs already mentioned: I would add to the list just a few a bit more specific:
Gkrellm, to monitor the system,
Beagle, to find out data among files of every kind,
Serpentine to burn audio CD
and Anjuta if you are interested in C programming (it's an IDE).

Amarok- lovely music player with good dynamic functions (got plenty of memory u see)
Skype- to talk to my girlfriend in spain!
gDesklets- makes me workspace look pretty

dillo is my favorite browser. it's obviously faster than anything else (with the possible exception of the more finicky links2). it doesn't have the features of firefox or opera, but it is way faster.

xmms does everything i want an audio player to do and i like changing the skins for it.

gimp is fantastic. inkscape is also great, but i don't use it all that often.

i like GQview for viewing images.

i'm always using different window managers. i have xfce on here, but my current favorite is 9wm. it's very fast and very different.

just started using sylpheed-claws for mail. with the plugins, it's very useable and it opens instantly.

hard to believe all this stuff is free.

I know the subject is sort of a dupe, but I can't resist. :-)

Openbox - I use Openbox with GNOME. Amazing.

Firefox - Okay, so it's very nearly standard equipment these days, but I still love it.

Thunderbird - I just want mail, and I want client-side filtering, and I don't want to fuss around with bogofilter or spamassassin or anything else okplsthx. Thunderbird does this for me.

Kino - Baby in the house, video camera with Firewire, and a wife who wants home videos on DVD. The interface seems to come from the "Let's leave options out 'coz options hurt usability" school of GNOMe interface design, but since I'm editing home movies, it's not an issue at all.

DVD Styler - This goes with the last entry. Who wants to edit an XML file just to build menus for a home-movies DVD?

AVI Demux - Damn near the GUI equivalent of Transcode. Yes, it has legitimate uses, too. ;-) For one thing, when I export DVD-compliant MPEG from Kino, I have it split the files on chapters to help keep things in sync. Before I pull the video into DVD Styler, I'll concatenate them in AVIDemux.

XFCE4 Terminal - Oh, quit whining about GNOME Baker not having a DVD Video mode and run growisofs from the command line already. Why XFCE4 Terminal instead of GNOME Terminal? It's less memory- and cpu-greedy than GNOME Terminal, and functionality is nearly identical.

wxMusik - It's like Rhythmbox, only much better. Think iTunes Party Shuffle with better library management. :-) Word of caution, though: You might want to avoid ALSA output and use OSS emulation instead.

PornView - It has an interface like gqView or gThumbs, but plays videos as well as viewing images -- now you know where the name comes from.

GIMPshop - GIMP's menu structure is weird.

hellanzb - a usenet binary downloader and auto-processor
mutt - "All mail clients suck. This one just sucks less."
gnupg - because private mail should stay private.
mplayer - my preferred media player
vim - ridiculously powerful editor. I learn a new trick every day. :D
gqview - a great image viewer
firefox - I don't really love it, but it's the most bearable browser around atm.

To my shame I also must admit I really love using DVDShrink in wine. :oops:

screen - I use this with irssi so I don't have to disconnect from IRC just to restart X

Kopete – Multi protocol instant messenger now with webcam

Opera – For web browsing / RSS Feeds / Email / Making the tea ;)

Gimp – One of the best examples off free software

Zinc – Yahoo chat client. Great fun !

Abiword – Lightweight word processor.

Xine – DVD / Video player.

K3B!!! It kicks Roxio's sorry butt (I'd use stronger language, but I'm self-censoring) to hell! I have Kubuntu set to read all my files of music and movies from my windows FAT32 partition, and can burn away to my heart's content without the bugginess of Windows and Roxio (can't believe I paid $$ for Roxio...) If I'm in windows, and I need to burn a disc, I get out of there and load up Kubuntu. (I keep windows for the boyfriend, and for some of my windows games).

KShisen-Sho: Very addictive little mahjongg game. If you haven't played it, try it.

PlanetPenguin Racer: Fun fun fun, as is Supertux.

Amarok. Slowly, but surely, it won me away from Winamp's clone XMMS.

Armagetron.

I'm sure the more I use Kubuntu, the more I'll love it and the more I'll find to love.

I alternate between GNOME and Fluxbox, therefore here's what I use in each DE (just the favourite stuff)

Evolution --> My virtual secretary as I usually call it, couldn't live without it now, as I work from home.
Opera --> The fastest non-text web browser there is (apart from dillo, obviously), plus it could handle my mail, as well as cater to my IRC needs (not many), and act as a bittorrent client. Kicks Firefox's ****... except for being proprietary.
amaroK --> Yeah, I know I'm running GNOME, but it's a great music player. Only beaten by foobar2000, in my view... but foobar is, unfortunately, Windows only...
OpenOffice.org --> Kicks MS Office's **** (especially in its price)
GAIM --> Simple and effective, my favourite IM program
K3b --> Another example of a great KDE app I use in GNOME. And I don't care, it's the best there is.
Torsmo --> Almost realtime non-invasive system monitoring. Yeah, I could use conky, but why would I, if I don't need the extra stuff?
Beaver --> Chews gedit's ****.
Stellarium --> Ooooohhh!, look at all those purrrty stars...

And all the stuff I use for web development.

XAMPP, Bluefish, Amaya, NVU, good ol' Beaver chewing on the code, and so on.

PCManFM --> Great little file manager, with tabs and all.
dillo--> It's faaaaaaaaast! Plus, I compiled a version with tabs, antialiasing, ssl and frames support, which makes it even more usable.
Sylpheed-Claws --> I actually prefer it over Evolution as an email client, but it's no virtual secretary. The extra stuff is worth it (over simple Sylpheed).
idesk, idesktool --> I like having a few icons on the desktop.
X-Chat --> To cater to my (few) IRC needs.

since the last time i answered this thread, i've gotten a new laptop that has much more juice (or, less weakness) than my old desktop. so, my preferences have changed, somewhat...

firefox - the only reason i ever stopped using it was because it was too slow on my old machine. firefox was my introduction to open source and i think it's beautiful.

thunderbird - it does everything i want, the way i want.

gimp - when it comes to putting your friends' heads on the bodies of trannies, nothing beats gimp.

gnome terminal - it's prettier than mrxvt.

kaffeine - better sound than xmms, my longtime favorite.

thunar - i love this thing. it's beautiful, it's clean and it does everything i want it to.

nano - i just do.

gqview - best image viewer EVA!!1

instead of watching the DVDs, you should just read the scripts in the terminal. now that would be hardcore. btw, have you ever tried mrxvt? it has tabs.

Gedit as LaTeX front-ent editor, a blog plug-in would make it a killer-app.
