View Full Version : Acer Aspire One AOD250.. noob help

Hi everybody. This is my first trip into the world of linux, and I'm in need of some advice. I recently bought an Acer Aspire One AOD250 netbook, and I am interested in switching from windows to Ubuntu Netbook Remix.

I looked through the website, looked at the forums, and began to read some of the threads concerning my netbook, and to be completely honest, I'm lost! I have only had experience with windows before, so could some of you more experienced peopls help me out a little?

Do I need to install drivers like with a clean install on windows (i can only find windows drivers on the acer website).

I have seen references to UNR being OOB for a lto of netbooks, though no direct confirmation if this applies to the AOD250.

Are there any major issues I should be aware of?

I am aware that moving over and upwards to linux will be a big step, and that its not like windows. I'm not afraid to jump in and learn, but I'd just like a push in the right direction, instead of me jumping in, messing it up, ad possibly breakig my new netbook

thanks in advance for any replies :)

Welcome to Ubuntu and to the Forums!

After downloading the .IMG file from http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download-netbook, you will then need to transfer it using an application to your flash drive. It's better if you use first the Windows application, Win32 Disk Imager. The instruction is found here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromImgFiles

Although, the laptop model you have is not specifically stated in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupport/Machines/Netbooks, it's worth the try.

Have fun!

Thankyou for the welcome and your advice.

I think I may have worded my request for help wrongly. The thing I really want to know is, I'm starting to get the idea that installing device drivers for linux is completely different to windows.

i have I/O ports/webcam/touchpad etc... I can find drivers on the acer website for use with windows, but not with linux. Is this because the model is not supported on linux, or because the drivers come with the linux installation, or...?

Thanks again

I was able to install Ubuntu Netbook Remix to a netbook smoothly. All hardware drivers, including touchpad and webcam, were installed successfully.

Excellent! Thankyou.. I will download and proceed to install UNR on my netbook in the morning (it now being 2.00am... oops) and shall report back!
