Can you please tell me what you did (eg, which command did you type)?

Since I find it really weird that it's trying to connect with localhost port 4001 while you need to connect to archive.ubuntu.com...

Do you have http_proxy or ftp_proxy env. vars??

What version are you trying to upgrade from?

Can you check your network settings in update-manager? I think you have some kind of proxy defined, which you are not running.

Or.. open a terminal (since I don't suspect proxy settings defined there):

# tell ubuntu that we are not upgrading lts to lts
echo "Prompt=normal" | sudo tee -a /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades
# Get updates from our repo's and see what we can upgrade
sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude -s safe-upgrade
# if you are happy with the results
# Do the upgrade
sudo aptitude -y safe-upgrades
# Install a dependecy
sudo aptitude update-manager-core
# Update to 8.10
sudo do-release-upgrade

To upgrade to 9.04 from 8.10, redo the actions except the first line, that one is not needed.

i still noticed the error message listed below when i inputed the first part of the code?

network proxy is set at direct internet connection.

what do you suggest.

well our son was down and figured out what was wrong. it seems that when your running anon proxy you cant update. when we disabled anon proxy we were able to update.

hope this helps anyone else out there it seems several people were having the same problem
thanks to everyone
