I understand that, if you want to stay on the cutting edge of software updates in Linux, you have to go a tad bit out of your way.

My question is, if I just wait around, will the Update Manager EVENTUALLY issue Firefox 3.5 and Openoffice 3.1.0? Or do I necessarily have to go out of my way to update applications to newer versions than those contained on the Ubuntu 9.04 ISO?

They'll come around eventually but you can go ahead and install them through APT if they're available (I think OOo 3.1.0 is there now). If not you can always download the .deb package from their website.
