how do you get you flash drive to operate on ubuntu and not just act as the installation disc

im going to guess, based on your supplied information that your wanting a persistent install.

Just install ubuntu to the Drive itself. You can unplug your main HDD, plug in your Flash drive, insert the Live CD and install the OS to the Flash Drive.
