First off, I used the instructions found here (http://www.mandladventures.com/2008/11/03/ubuntu-810-hdmi-sound-configuration/) to get sound working just fine. But this machine isn't designed for video performance under linux. (It dual boots \/ista) When it's running the proprietary drivers, the screen has minor flickers across it and it's unnerving me a little (plus the card makes a weird noise when the video drivers are activated, either under linux or \/ista).

Is it possible to run the sound drivers w/o the video drivers? I tried to deactivate the proprietary drivers, but the sound went away. I usually administer the machine through x forwarding anyway so video acceleration isn't really needed. I'm just trying to learn linux, so when I finally get the $ to build an actual server, I'll know what I'm doing. It's just that I built this machine over a year ago and was never able to get it to make any sound under linux (any distro), and that seemed a little silly to me.
