I have just installed this new release of Kubuntu for the first time. I thought there were more desktop effects? There are no animations when switching desktop or anything... I saw in a screenshots tour they has some effects from compiz, such as moving your mouse to the corner displays all windows. Should I just install compiz or is there a bunch more for the KDE window manager?

by default ocmpiz is disabled. to enable it you need
these two packages
compizconfig-settings-mananger
compiz-kde

Go To System Settings > Desktop > Desktop Effects to enable/configure Kwin's compositor.

Installing compiz is unnecessary and may conflict with Kwin.

Is it possible to install either of these in regular Ubuntu and not Kubuntu without conflict?

I'm not sure I understand your question.

Compiz is the commonly used compositor for Ubuntu. Kwin is the commonly used compositor (and window manager) for Kubuntu.

You want to install Kwin on a Gnome desktop (Ubuntu)?

Nevermind, you cleared things up for me right there.
