View Full Version : [ubuntu] Can't get Ubuntu 9.04 to install on my PS3 - Display problems on Install

My monitor is an ASUS VH226H.

I managed to install previous versions, but I can't get 9.04 to install, plus it was with a different display.

Previous versions I intalled using my SDTV, which only does 480i, thus the installer was a NIGHTMARE since all windows ok/next/back/cancel/etc buttons were cut off and I had to guess where they were. I really want to avoid using my TV to install it again.

Now I have a HDMI 1080p monitor so im using that.

I burned the PS3 version of the 9.04 desktop cd, installed the bootloader off the cd, then booted to OtherOS mode.

I press enter at the kboot prompt, and after a few lines of text..... my monitor keeps flashing white and grey as if it was an NES!

The flashing is the backlight as it keeps getting and losing the HDMI signal, causing it to turn on and off repeatedly. It does not go away until I hold down the power button for two beeps to turn off the PS3. I can't even switch inputs on the monitor unless I unplug the HDMI cable or perform a ahrd shutdown on the PS3!

Anybody know why this is happening?

Is there anything I can do to fix it or bypass it?

I'm having the exact same problem. I've read post on it being your video settings....

http://psubuntu.com/installation-instructions/setup/

I've read posts about the problem being the kboot.conf file and you needing to edit it, but no description on what you need to edit. There was mention of a different boot statement in order to get it to boot in a different location.

This last thread sent me in a 1000 different directions, but I've still yet to get it to install either. I've found an install guide for 8.10 but nothing telling me how to install 9.04 ps3 build.

I eventually gave up and downloaded and burned the alternative installer version, that works, but Ubuntu was running far too slow, so I just switched to Yellow Dog Linux.

You wouldn't happen to have a link to that alternative installer version would you?

Here is a link where i found the alternate-cd but i was not able to get it to work. I am trying on my standard tv so not sure if that is causing the problem. The error i was getting was "Software not installed". It does have the older 8.10 which does work, i was trying to upgrade to the 9.04.

Will the Playstation not upgrade to 9.04 using Update Manager?

Ive got a problem, the PPc+PS3 ubunutu CD won't install on my PS3

when i hit enter at kboot, my screen goes blank?

I am a brand new Linux user and thought PS3 linux was a good start to learn
