What would you do if you had a million dollars?

I would donate 0.5 of it to Canonical, and the other half of it to the Free Software Foundation.

With the coming depression , I would buy 500K of gold bullion and 500K of gold mining share. When the US economy is totally collapsed (should happen withing 1-4 years), I sell my gold and buy real-estate.

Well...A million isn't really that much money anymore. That's why there are so many huge lotteries (in the US, most lottery winnings are taken as tax. Meanwhile in Canada, we get to keep all of it) and people buying tickets for them.

A million would pay off all our bills and we could travel a few places, but we still would not be able to retire or anything.

Now if you were talking about $40 million...

Put it in the bank to earn interest. This way I could donate much more money to FOSS stuff and have a lot to myself! I'd get myself a high end MacBook or MacBook Pro, then I'd dual boot with Ubuntu Linux. Of course, I'd try and keep at least a million of it in the bank to mantain the interest rate, so money could continue being donated to Canonical for Ubuntu! I'd buy my entire family Macs with the Linux dual boot as well! And I'd donate money to several charities.

Build an addition on the house, replace the mini-van with a newer car, upgrade appliances/furniture/mower/etc and squirrel away the rest into a "rainy day" fund and conservative investments.

Seriously, I do believe in tithing, so I'd give ten percent off the top, then pay all our bills.
Nice minivan for my wife and a sensible car or light truck for me.
New computers for both of us and one to each child's household for the grandkids.
The rest in savings accounts or buried in the back yard in mason jars.

I start a brewery. The number of American owned beer company is dwindling. I might buy a house on the Crystal Coast of N.C. and rent it when I'm not using it.

I would take it to the bank. Then, I'd ask for it all back in pennies. I would then take those pennies and melt them all down, forming a gigantic scale penny, from 100 million normal sized pennies. Then I'd have the largest penny in the world, which I'd use to get into the Guiness Book of World Records or something. I'd garner a good deal of publicity, which would then allow me the leverage to sell it for a decent profit. Once I do that, I'd take the money and invest sensibly with it, paying off bills, making money off interest and mutual funds, and the like while living a comfortable, if not extravagent, lifestyle. With the exception of that one man papperazi/stalker coin collector who I eventually find out wants to write my biography, which he eventually does but no one ever really reads it. I make $42 dollars as a result of it.

I would use the money open up my own vegetarian restaurant in Oregon or Washington. Then I would set aside a good sum of that money away in gold after getting a town house or condo. Permaculture in the suburbs might also be fun. I've wanted to do that as well.
