Shutdown Problem

I am new to Linux and wanted to give it a go. I downloaded the latest Ubuntu OS (64 bit) for my Toshiba Laptop (Core2Duo Centrino) and managed to install it along with my Windows OS.

The problem is when ever I try to reboot or shutdown my laptop from Ubuntu, I get the Ubuntu logo with a process line underneath depicting some shutdown process. But after a while I get a bank screen with a blinking cursor. This screen stays there forever and I have to hold the shutdown button on the laptop to kill it.

I am sure there is some process that is holding the shutdown sequence. I need directions for troubleshooting. I am very keen on using Ubuntu for development and want to solve this problem, so please help me.

The problem is narrowing down which process it is that's hanging up. Have you tried going through the Log Viewer to see if there is anything in there that might inidcate why it is stalling like it does?

This is one of those frequent bugs in the 64-bit version. I'm not familiar with the 64-bit version and can't advise you much, but I can tell you that you're hardly the only one to wrestle with this... it doesn't seem to be as much of an issue in the 32-bit release. And most people can't tell any difference between 32 and 64-bit anyway.

How do I get about doing that...where does the log viewer reside?? is it an application??

Log File Viewer should be in the Administration menu.
