Ok im trying to install ubuntu 9.04 which i have before on my own computer onto a fairly old computer. I am installing ubuntu on it because i love ubuntu... and this old computer's copy of windows is corrupt and the owner cannot find his installation disk. So i put the ubuntu boot disk in the computer and i selected "install on this computer" but when it gets to the installation desktop screen all that shows is the orange desktop and a cursor in the center.... i waited and waited (12 hours i let it stay on) and the cursor couldnt be moved and nothing else happened... does anyone know what could be wrong ?

Post system specs. You may not have enough RAM to install ubuntu.

Corrupt cd or bad cd drive, most likely.

if its not the cd, you may want to try 8.04. LTS has a habit of working on older computers.

MD5SUM (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM) your downloaded iso
if that checks out burn your iso as an image at no more than 4x

then boot the Live CD and choose check cd for defects.

if that checks out try installing.

if still problems look at the link below

boot options (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions)
try safe graphic mode F4, then some of the other options F6.

if all else fails try the alternate text based installer (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloadmirrors#alternate) which is a way better and more powerful installation compared to the Live CD

Hello!

I have got the exact same problem here. I tried Xubuntu 9.04, Ubuntu 9.04 and Mythbuntu 9.04(I was going to make this pc a mythtv frontend...). It does not even work as a live session. I tried playing with the "F6" installation choices too, but to no avail!
I did try the usb stick on my laptop that I am running ubuntu 9.04 and the live session works with no problem - so it is not a corrupt 'iso'!
The desktop is running Windows 2000 at the moment so I doubt it is not powerful enough to actually run Ubuntu.
I will try the alternate installation iso, if I can figure out how to do it, that is!
Has anyone got any suggestions?
xZachtmx, did you figure it out eventually?
Thank you everybody!

Vasilis

PS I am only new to Ubuntu and Linux, but I am running it successfully at an Aspire One Netbook with no issues - after lots of tweaking of course. I also managed to install it on a not so old toshiba laptop. So I have some understanding of terminal how-to, but not much, so don't get toooooo technical please!
