I am trying to install the newest update of Ubuntu desktop on my vista laptop. The computer boots from the disk fine, but when it comes to clicking on "Install Ubuntu" or any of the other options on the menu, I click on them and nothing happens and i cant scroll down and select any of the other options.

Any help will be appreciated.

1) Did you md5sum the download?

2) Did you burn at 4x or less?

3) If yes to both, then you could have a bad disk.

You will need to reburn, but first let the community know if you did steps 1 and 2.

You can follow this (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM) through to check the md5sum.

After you md5 and check the CD for defects, take the time to try the liveCD (in live session .... aka Try Ubuntu without changes) to see how it reacts to your system specs' and hardware.... the liveCD is usually a good indicator if things to come ;)

Also, another site for reference as you dual boot:

Good luck. Back-up and defrag windows first.

If you have ensured that your CD was burnt at slow speed & have checked the checksum, then there is a good 'how-to' here.

I know it works, as it's the one I used !!!!

Hope that helps

Guys kind of a new problem. :(

Ive used the torrent suggested on the irc help chat and ive used the download off the ubuntu site and i am not getting the right MD5 sum.
It keeps coming up as this:
*66fa77789c7b8ff63130e5d5a272d67b
(if that is the right MD5 sum please say)

Any ideas what i could be doing wrong??

Thanks
Adam

Okies .... let me try a different train of thought .....

Go here ..

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

Download it. (forget the checksum for now)

There are still some variables, such as is the burning drive led-laser lens clean (if you have a cd cleaner, now is good time to use it !)

Burn it as an iso image (This is MOST important - do not burn it as a data disc) using a speed no higher than 4X.

See if you can boot off the CD, try it in 'Live' mode, to ensure it can read itself.. At least then we have a pretty good chance of the CD being okay.

Please post back

Regards,

Phill.

Try booting with the CD.
