I ran an upgrade a few days ago and lost all of my bars, panels and menus on a 9.04 install. But X seems to running fine. I can run 90% of all my apps by command line or file manager. I can even launch and configure alacarte but still can't get any of the panels and bars to show. I am thinking it is a python issue but so far no luck in tracking down the root cause. If anyone out there has experienced this or has an idea which conf file may have got corrupted, it will save me a few (more) grey hairs. many thanks

As previously indentified in another thread last year, Gnome was showing as uninstalled in synaptic. running a reinstall of gnome fixed the problem.
