I'm new to Ubuntu, and I just spent the last 2 days installing and getting everything just the way I like it(I'm using Gnome)
Since my PC is older and VLC was dropping frames, I turned compiz off while I was watching a movie. Now, whether compiz is on or off, I have no bottom panel(the window list one). I think it is still there, but below the bottom of the screen, because when I move the top panel to the right or bottom it disappears also(If I move it to the left I can still see it). What it feels like to me is that the desktop is somehow larger than my screen can display(I'm guessing), and i can't figure out how to change it back.

After some investigation, it turns out that somehow in the ATI Catalyst Control Center, Display Manager-> Desktop Area had been changed to 1600x1200, when my display properties were set to 1280x1024. Problem Solved.
