...I quickly checked my own site to see if I could view directory contents in an unauthorized way via the ftp route, but it returned an error. I guess you'd need an ftp server explictely running, then?
Any other ways the contents of a directory can be viewed, even if there exists an index.html?

You could look into nubuntu or BackTrack distros. They are intended to provided security testing tools (penetration testing). They have Live CDs.

Using FTP is one big (security) compromise, anyway. You kinda deserve the issues you'll get by using it. You're far better off using a real protocol with proper security mechanisms.
