I just made a cd for ubuntu 9.04 and i wanted to try without installing but when it boots up it asks for a login and password and i was never given a login and password

where did you get the image from or did you make the cd yourself.?

Checksum your .iso, burn at no more than 4x, and check cd for errors at opening menu. One of these is amiss, and that is why you are being asked for a password -- this should not happen until installing.
