Cant startup new install

I've just installed Ubuntu on my laptop but on reboot it does not seem to be booting up.

I have had text on the screen for about 10 minutes... any ideas?

Okay finally it has come up now but the trackpad wil not move the cursor, and the error 'Failed to initialize HAL!' has appeared.
