unable to install Ubuntu

Hi to all experts,
I've spent all last night and most of today on this problem and I'm stuck so would appreciate your help. I am able to run Ubuntu 8 and 9 from a live CD, however when I actually install it I can only get it to run after using the "recovery mode" followed by normal boot.
When I shut down after a session and try to reboot I have to go through recovery mode again. I realise there must be something i'm doing wrong - but what?

What happens when you start in normal mode?

I get Grub stage 1.5 loading...
grub loading please wait....
followed by the Ubuntu logo and the progress bar which works to the right...
then the circular "working" icon for a few seconds
followed by a small white mouse cursor..
followed by a black screen
is all!
