My father gave me an old laptop the other day that I'd like to install a version of Linux on. It is a Dell Inspiron 2500 from 2002ish. 10gb hard drive w/ 128mg memory.

What versions of Linux would work on this laptop? I'd like to try something new because I already use Ubuntu and Linux Mint on a day to day basis. Thanks.

(is there a website somewhere to compare system requirements for Linux distros???)

Those specs are quite low for a modern Linux system... you`ll definitely want to look outside the Ubuntu family. These days, I am fond of AntiX for low ram systems:

Xubuntu should still work on that if you use the alternate install cd.

Installed Xubuntu (part of the Ubuntu family) on a 256MB laptop and the performance was so slow as to be nearly useless. Even if you do get Xubuntu installed in 128MB, you're likely to be very unhappy with the performance.

Would agree with looking outside the Ubuntu family entirely.

Try PUPPY. If you insist on a Ubuntu flavor, you may try crunchbang too.

I'm definitely open to things outside the Ubuntu family.

A 256 Meg memory module will cost you about $40 - it will hold 2 of them.

With 384 M you'll run CrunchBang well and Ubuntu a littl less than well.

With 512 M you'll run Ubuntu pretty well

Ive got puppy install on my 2g 512mb eee... runs faster than xp does on my quad core. Its so lightweight it might be worth trying. I had xubuntu on it before and it was painfully slow. crunchbang looks interesting tho!
