I've been using ubuntu for years now. I installed many times on different hardware with no problems. I recently installed Jaunty on a laptop and an old PC and everything is perfect.

Then I install on a Dell XPS Gen3 (on an unformatted partition) and it won't let me login! My password is not accepted. I'm 100% positive that the password is correct. I tried to reset the password and it still won't work. I even reinstalled twice.

So, being an intermediate linux user, I copied the /etc/passw* and /etc/shadow* files from another installation and was able to login with that password.

But I still can't sudo. It seems that sometimes the password works and sometimes it doesn't. Any suggestions?
