Empathy supports video and voice in some protocols. That's a good reason to use it as a default IM client. I'll stick to Pidgin, because I prefer text chat.

I don't use voice and video, just text chat. Pidgin works fine for that. I can't comment on Empathy because I have never used it. I see no need to try another program when Pidgin does what I need it to do and it does it well.

Pidgin works fine if you just use it for chats, make sure to give it an open port and file transfers work fine as well.

I installed Empanty from PPA on my Jaunty and it never had any video audio function in my case.
