Hi im new to Ubuntu so please go easy on me!

Ive got Windows Vista installed and have created a new partition so I could install Ubuntu and have dual boot.

Ive burnt the latest Ubuntu to a CD and 1st of all tried to run Ubunut form the CD to see what it was like before I installed anything. It got to the Ubuntu logo with the bouncing status bar which changed to a loading bar. After that the screen stays blank?

I thought id give it a go and install Ubuntu anyway... Chose the Install Ubuntu option from the CD which did the same thing above. Loaded to the end of the loading bar then the screen went black and did nothing else.

Any ideas? Being new to this im at a loss.

Thanks in advance for your help!!!

Have you given the alt cd a try to see if it boots normally?

It's the text based installer not the pretty graphical one I have to use it to install dmraid so it can see my fakeraids. So download the alternative cd burn it install it to the partition you choose and see if ubuntu boots up for you that way.

Let me know what happens.

here is the link for you

It could be a dodgy download/disk

Download a fresh copy, then look at the instructions here (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM) to make sure the image has been downloaded correctly and intact.

Then, when you burn the image to a CD, make sure it burn it at the lowest possible setting (around 2x or 4x burn speed) as this is the safest speed to burn at. Burning at higher speeds can sometimes cause problems.

Ok things have NOT GONE WELL!!!

I used the alternative installation CD which i followed and seemed to install ok. When to do the 1st boot ands it doong the same thing!!! Loading the Ubuntu screen with the loading bar then the screen going blank.

Now this is the worst bit! I think that grub program has f00ked my Windows even thou i made it go to the Ubuntu partition.

When i select Vista from the menu it quickly shows a couple of lines then goes back the the OS selection screen!

Please help! Anyone know how to get atleast my Windows back?

Would really appreciate the help!

Try supergrub:

http://supergrubdisk.org (http://sup)

FWIW, there are known problems with older ATI cards and 9.04, as the drivers are no longer supported by the OEM.
