I am working on configuring a new desktop computer. I initially installed Windows XP Professional and side by side Ubuntu 9.04. That ran fine for a while. Then I wanted to burn more distro CDs, popped in the original Ubuntu 9.04 CD. I do not know any more what happened but Ubuntu did not start up any more. Then I wanted to reinstall Ubuntu but that did not work either because either running Ubuntu from Live CD or trying to install it, I only get a long list of

[Blocknumbers] I/O Error on sr0 ...

I tried other Ubuntu releases (9.04, 8.10, 8.04, UbuntuStudio) all with the same result. These disks are not defective, because on my Lenovo T41 laptop they run without a problem.

The optical drive is not the problem either because
1) I replaced it with another and the problem persisted
2) I reinstalled Windows and play DVDs on the optical drive

What could be the problem?

The disk in question or linux kernel bug (unlikely)

Rarely there are conflicts with system configuration.

Try cleaning the disk. If that fails create an iso and mount it
