I upgraded to ubuntu 9.10 and all that shows up after logging in is a terminal window on a blank black screen. xcfe session works though.

Why did you update to Ubuntu 9.10 while its still in Alpha? You most likely will have to wait until the bugs in 9.10 are worked out for your system to work again. Try using the command to update ubuntu

sudo apt-get update
and then
sudo apt-get upgrade

If theres away to down grade I don't know it sorry. So if you can't wait I would do a new install and copy over your files from the old partition

sudo aptitude install kubuntu-desktop. Then choose KDM. after restart select menu session kde. kde will then work! I think you will prefer it.

I am a testing Kubuntu 9.10, its Ok but people who want a stable OS must stick to 9.04 until 9.10 final.
