Technet subscribers will be able to download the release version from tomorrow. I guess the Microsoft media machine will be out in force over the next few months.

I'm a Technet subscriber so I'll be checkin' it out tomorrow (for work cough cough) :-)

Were still on XP here, and I don't think we will be switching to W7 anytime soon.
My company usually waits for the first service pack of the new Windows, before they even start to think about switching. Luckily we did not switch to Vista!

Personally I'd like them to go to an Open Source OS (Ubuntu!?!), but I don't think a 8000 employee company that uses MS Connect Sharepoint, and supplies their own w32 software with there instruments will ever make that step...

I run Vista on one my game PC, and I really hate it. In the beginning everthing was fine, but now I am ready for the annual re-installation :(. Maybe I will give W7 a try, hopefully I can and upgrade discount since Vista was so disspointing.

You just like to brag :). Even if you had access to all MS software, you would realize that you don't actually need anything...

By that logic, you don't "need" Ubuntu, you got other distros like Fedora or Arch. If he's getting the latest and greatest Windows for free, it'd be stupid not to try it out on a few games or something.

Im considering W7 for a separate Win games only PC... apparently its got better retrospective capabilities and can run XP games properly - so bring on the release version.

I wouldnt know what else I would need it for though...

Is it worth the $350 it costs to subscribe?

I would also like my company to go open source but I know that isn't really viable at the present point in time. People are content with the software they currently use and are comfortable with. Changing that would probably cause alot of discontent, especially if people had to learn new software.

There would also be some problems with some specialist hardware and software we use. We need to have certified MailSort software and there is currently nothing of high standard available for Linux.

I'm already using Ubuntu on our Intranet server, but I would have to be careful about using Ubuntu on the workstations due to those issues and Exchange compatibility issues.

In business terms I don't see the purpose of rolling out Windows 7 because XP already works fine for most jobs, but by using Technet I'll be able to decide whether or not the upgrade would be worth it and I enjoy trying new operating systems and software :-)

I went halfers with a friend. We emailed them in advance of subscribing and they gave us a 20% discount. In terms of what you get it is worth it. Between us we have 10 keys for each version of Windows, Office, Outlook, Exchange, Server, HyperV and a load of other software over the last 9 years. That's 10 licenses for Ultimate, 10 for Professional, 10 for Home etc. You also get release versions of software months before everyone else. This is pretty good if you need to evaluate software for the company you work for.

So yeah, I'd say you get quite alot for your money, and almost a necessity of you work in business computing.

I would like to go open source too, but unfortunately Ubuntu isn't compatible with some of the specialist printers the company uses and there is no certified Linux software available for doing UK MailSorts. Those things are absolutely key to the function of the company I work for so we have to use Windows on the workstations. I do use Ubuntu server on our Intranet server though and have a desktop running Ubuntu on my desk which most gets used for LBreakout2 :-)

You just like to brag

True :-) Last week I installed Android on my Windows phone and bragged about that too :-)

Well, I also need to run Windows, and I was running Windows 7 (both beta and RC) for quite a while now in virtualbox. To be fair, I am checking RTM tomorrow as well ;). MS gives all software for free for new starting companies, to hook them up early.

Whats Windows 7 ?

Could we please all get over the "Whats Windows X ?" thing? To be blunt, it's not funny.

Out tomorrow, eh? Heh. That's pretty cool, can't wait for it. =]

I would like to congratulate Microsoft on Windows 7. I have been using it for about 2 months now and love it! I have used MS products going back to DOS and Win 3.1 so I've seen my share of not too impressive products from them. I'm using 64 bit version and it's been stable. I occasionally try other OS's just out of curiousity and Windows 7 64 bit and Ubuntu 64 bit are easily the two easiest to use, hassle free systems anyone could hope for. Try it if you haven't. After all it's "free". At least until next July. I am amazed how many in the "Open source community" can be so narrow and closed minded.

Judge not, lest ye be judgded :-)

There have also been releases of Linux that actually damage hardware. Eg. the problem that was breaking NIC cards and other issues that caused damage to hard disks in laptops. Software can be patched, whereas damaged hardware can be expensive to replace, especially of that hardware is onboard.

This isn't just a Windows thing. It's pretty much impossible to develop a complex operating system that has no bugs.

For any other Technet subscribers, the release will be available at 10am PDT. That's 6pm for those of us in the UK and Ireland.

I have been working for some time to upgrade my company to open source. I've started "infecting" the servers with linux, and am working on a desktop solution next. Thankfully my company is around 50 users, and if I can get two or three specialized apps either working, or replaced, I will be GOLDEN. Then instead of thousands on liscenceing, we can donate to the cause!

I agree on vista. We actually have three machines that run vista, but they are tablets, and vista does work better for them. Other than that one redeeming feature I have not found any real advantage to Vista, and I am not looking forward to Windows 7. I just want to crawl away from Microsoft with all the headaches I have had from them as of late. Open source developers, PLEASE keep your wits about you and don't make some of the idiotic mistakes I see these big companies making!

piratebay already has RTM floating around. I'm sure the normal release will shortly after tomorrow if not that same day. Either way I have no plans currently to get it purchased or otherwise.

Unfortunately, the nature of this bug coupled with the fact that it will likely be patched within days (MS says it's already patched) means it will do nothing in the wild and it's only use is fodder for Windows bashing.

Yeah, I just downloaded my copy tonight. I was playing with the RC on my test box, but now that the RTM version is out I will install it on my main box since I need to get more familiar with it in case my clients want to migrate:popcorn:.

Search Google, there are promo codes to get 25% off.

And yes, it's worth it if you need to support/develop for Windows since you can get most of their products via download (a DVD option is also available for extra).
