Anyone know of a Linux based RPG or MMORPG that works directly with Linux. Not something I have to place in virtual box or in wine.

Thanks,
dmcdaniel

Obligatory Planeshift comment.

I haven't played it yet, but the game looks pretty nice, and it's completely free. Check it out.

And of course Neverwinter Nights is a great RPG, runs on Linux (http://nwn.bioware.com/downloads/linuxclient.html).

NWN runs native but it works great under WINE as well and much easier to install

Planeshift may look similar to WoW/EQ from the screenshots but it is meant for ROLEPLAYING. Combat happens, but it's not the prime focus of the game and many people are dissapointed by it because of that. If you're looking for something more WoW-ish you're better off playing regnum.

What is NVN and Regnum about? I tried to find info on NVN but was not able too.

Regnum looks pretty cool. A More simplistic style of WoW.

I've played all of these, and they are much better than regnum online or planeshift. I played regnum online for 2 days, and all you do is kill monsters...It takes so long to lvl up, I only got to lvl 5. And you can only start going into war at about lvl 30, otherwise you'll get slaughtered.

NVN stands for Neverwinter Nights, do a google search and you'll find some info on it. Kind of dated now but a pretty good game nonetheless.

It still looks pretty damned good to me. Bioware put out a 450 MB "Final" patch last year, which added enormous amounts of new content, including horseback riding and much, much more. And it comes in a Linux version.

EVERY player-created adventure I have installed from Neverwinter Vault has played fine. The only hitch I have found is that Linux, which allows uppercase letters in other nwn directories, requires that all .hak files be lowercase. Easy enough to do.

Complete instructions on installing the Diamond Edition ($20 at any place that still sells Windows games :() can be found here:

Go and get Neverwinter Nights, don't think twice. It's amazing, it's linux native, and there are tons of modules you can get from Neverwinter Nights Vault that are even better the original game.

Although is propietary software (a pitty), it's by far one of the best rpg engines ever.

It's virtualy a never ending game. It's worth every coin. A must-have.

I recently got hold of NWN2, but I really don't like the control method, the camera turns far too fast when the mouse pointer hits any of the screen boundaries, & the parabolic (if that's what it is called) game play is very difficult for me to deal with.

Unless I can find a way to make it comfortable, I'll just dump it & call it a waste of time.

I have tried configuring the mouse turning & camera moves to be as slow as possible, even so, it is all but unplayable, creating tension, as opposed to enjoyment.

I certainly hope that the original NWN is far more playable than its younger offspring.

I've played both 1 and 2, and I agree with your words. The camera is completely hopeless in NWN 2. If you set it to "free mode" you can kinda sorta live with it , if you ignore the fact that it rotates way too fast.

The camera in NWN 1 was way better.

Thanks for posting Nevon.

It's nice to get some feedback that verifies the problem. Having given me such, you have now single-handedly killed the nagging doubt that it may have just been me being dumb with the setup configuration. :)

If the NWN 1, controls are way better, then I will get hold of it & give it a go.

Thanks again.

Go for it. It's not hard at all to install, and it runs absolutely beautifully in Linux. I don't have a very impressive machine, but it still starts in like 2 seconds and there's not a trace of lag or anything.

GNU FreeDink was a pretty interesting program. It comes with the game Dink Smallwood which is one of it's D-Mods.

Well if you want a commercial MMO that works well,

Dungeons & Dragons Online
World of Warcraft

Both I have played (dumped WoW for DDO which I still am active on), and work fine in Wine. I use crossover games to run my games, but if you look over at winehq, DDO is pretty simple to get going now. The _OLD_ instructions were evil, but now its pretty darn simple. WoW is pretty straightforward too.

I've been looking for a good Roleplaying game for a while now.

I tried it on WoW and various other games, but it was nothing like D&D like I thought the roleplaying would be.

I can't wait to try this out.

Vendetta Online is really fun if you're looking for a space combat/exploration/trade game. It's twitch-based combat too. You can be anything from a trader to a pirate.

I installed NWN today, & I've almost finished the tutorial/introduction.

You were right Nevon, it plays so much better than NWN2. I like it a LOT.

So as I get more used to it I'm going to like it a whole lot more.

They probably don't want to make games as good as this anymore, as people play them for too many years... ;)

Thanks again. :D

I started playing runescape back when I didn't have a linux machine, but it works fine on Mac and Linux too. You just need a web browser and you need to have Java installed.

Everyone else has been saying it and I'll chime in, too. Neverwinter Nights is an excellent game. I've been working on a server of my own for a while and discovered Ubuntu while trying to figure out how to get a good Linux sever going. There's some screenshots up on my blog (http://blog.shadowsandsilver.com/).

I played a bit of Dungeons & Dragons Online when it was in beta. Was kind of impressed by it at that time, but never bought it. Isn't it free to play now? or something like that? Still good game?

yes, it's free, though you can buy some premium content. it's not bad, but it's a simple hack-and-slash game, for the most part. one could imagine they could have done way more with d&d franchise.

I've searching in google and find this thread talking about the MMORPG..
I'm curios about those games that run under Windows (only)..
Why do they have to do that?

Anybody tried dragonica on wine/ virtualbox?

I've already tried it..
It also has something I call with anti-cheat..
Ah, man..
Why do they have those kind of things?
At least, they should make it can run under other operating system..
