I am trying to install Ubuntu on fiancées laptop, however the chipset is not supported by the 2.6.28 kernel, but support for it was added in the 2.6.30 kernel. I was wondering if it is possible to build a liveCD or install CD with a different kernel. I know how to add or upgrade/build custom kernels once the OS is running, however I was wondering it it was possible to build install media for 9.04 with the 2.6.30 kernel.

Been having issues with getting the new livecd to boot, and the documentation says that it doesn't support custom kernals with Remasterys, so is there another alternative method to using a new kernel with the Ubuntu installer?

Maybe you can try the karmic koala alpha´s.

Or download and install the new kernel as shown by
http://www.ramoonus.nl/2009/06/10/linux-kernel-2-6-30-installation-guide-for-ubuntu-and-debian-linux/

It's very easy and the bootloader is updated automatically and so on, but I should add a disclaimer. There's no guarantee this wont add new problems for you, since the kernel isn't actually supported for Jaunty.

Edit: Although my own experience with it has been positive.
