View Full Version : Is it just me (concerning Amarok)?

I apparently seem to be the only one annoyed by the fact that Amarok gave up its equalizer for 2.0. One of the reasons why I was such a fan of Amarok was that it was one of only a handful of media players that had an equalizer.
Is one in development? I tried looking for a plug-in, but never found an equalizer.

No, it's not just you.
I have more problems than that, too.
I just opened Amarok for the first time since update and the sound won't work in it. Sound works everywhere else, just not Amarok.
It's also dropped the current playlist I always have up.

There is a ppa for the 1.4 version.

I also know opensuse has a few repos for certain version.

Fedora has a .rpm for it aswell.

So no matter what distro you are on, you should be able to get the 1.4 version.

OK, I fixed my sound problem.
Apparently it's a common problem after upgrading to jaunty & amarok 2.
I just installed phonon-backend-xine
& it all works now.

Still annoyed at having no equalizer, I went to a lot of trouble to tweak the look of that a few months ago.
I don't think it will stop me from using version 2, though.

The equalizer could return, http://amarok.kde.org/blog/archives/809-Missing-features-in-Amarok-2.html. Some of the items on that list has returned.

No, I'm in the same boat as you. I mean, the equalizer was never great, but still... software for Linux with an equalizer is rare enough as it is. However, you may be satisfied with this alternative: Songbird (http://www.getsongbird.com). It features a fairly decent equalizer, as well as iPod support and dependable library management. You won't regret giving it a try.

Speaking of iPod support, did they ever put that back in Amarok? Because I remember being pissed that they took it out.

Here (http://amarok.kde.org/blog/archives/809-Missing-features-in-Amarok-2.html#c6043) is the comment from the main developer....

Somehow it just gets uncomfortable to read his opinions (http://amarok.kde.org/blog/archives/809-Missing-features-in-Amarok-2.html#c5448).

Just try to imagine a new car model with a headlights and A/C dropped out of the features???

Luckily I found a way to upgrade to 1.4 :lolflag:

The "opinion" that you linked to is not so strange to me. Many developers write code to scratch a personal itch. They add functionality for personal reasons. I don't see anything wrong with that.

Yes, there are some feature regressions with Amarok 2. However, by my reading the intent was to build a completely new app off of a more stable code base that would allow for many more improvements in the future. Amarok 2 isn't really a continuation of Amarok 1.4 -- it's more like a totally new application that does a lot of the things that Amarok 1.4 did.

I understand that Amarok 1.4 works better for a lot of people at this point. I wish that Amarok 2 had support for UMS devices, myself. However, I do think that eventually Amarok 2 will surpass what could have been done with the Amarok 1.x codebase.

I miss my multiband compressor I used to have in QCD.

With a simple, easy hack, it looks like you can (see this link (http://awainzin-foss.blogspot.com/2009/08/amarok-2-universal-mass-storage-device.html)).

hmm. I just tried it (Amarok 2.1.1) and it appears that change isn't in the Kubuntu repo's yet. My apologies for speaking too soon.

But at least we can relax knowing that it will be available sometime soon! :guitar:
