I've searched around the net, and found that many people have this problem. Usually not in the same condition, some are unanswered, and some solutions don't work.

I was going to install ubuntu 9.04 on an IBM Thinkpad, when the LiveCD wasn't working. Now, I thought that it was missing graphics drivers, so I used the alternate install CD.

Whenever I boot the system, it works like normal... gets the loading bar... and boom, screen turns off. It plays the login sound (if you press escape it plays it again). I can get into Terminal, I just have no idea what to do there. I've been using ubuntu (on 4 of 5 computers that support it) for a while, and have never had this happen before.

Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like memory maybe. Go here and see if your laptop is on the list:

When I click on my laptop's page, I get a Page not Found error.

RAM may be a problem... I guess I'll just have to use Windows 2000 on this computer...
