I have downloaded the 8.10 version and burned it to a cd. I am trying to put this on an older machine. Every time I try to click the install Ubuntu option, the splash screen comes up and then a bunch of error messages appear. (Stuff about I/O, etc) If I try to load the live version and install it that way, sometimes the same messages appear and sometimes it will actually boot the live version.

The cd works fine in my windowsXP machine and I can run the live version no problem.

I tried setting up the other hard drive as a slave drive in my XP machine to install it there, but I receive the same errors as above.

Any ideas?

Post system specs. Also, you might look at system requirements for 8.10 at ubuntu.com.

512 mb ram,
40 gb hdd,
asus mobo, with a amd athlon 2200 (or similiar processor).

The system is about 5 years old, but seems to exceed the min requirements for the ubuntu installation.

Run a checksum on your .iso, burn at no more than 4x, and check the cd for errors at the opening menu.

After you try merlin's suggestions try this if you have no success:

Look at Boot Options (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions) when booting the Live CD

if none of them work try the alternate text based installer (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloadmirrors#alternate)
