I recently installed Ubuntu on a machine with a 3DLabs Wildcat VP560 video card and a Dell 1901FP LCD monitor. The highest resolution I can get is 1024x768. When I boot it says I'm "running in low graphics mode." I've looked in lots of online help files and forums but nothing has fixed it. Is there a driver or something that will work with this card?

Try looking at the 'Hardware Drivers' utility. It's listed under System Preferences or somethin'.

It ought to list some proprietary / 3rd party drivers for your video card that you can install.

Assuming you can install some additional drivers and fix your resolution, go into Preferences > Appearance and head over to the Visual Effects tab to turn on the higher graffix.

Edit: A couple pages in the guide from http://www.ubuntupocketguide.com/ has some screenshots describing the "Hardware Drivers" utility.

Try the 3DLabs website (http://www.3dlabs.com/content/Legacy/). They did write drivers for Linux, but they seemed to be aimed at Red Hat and Novell/Suse.

3DLabs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3Dlabs) (a subsidiary of Creative Technology) stopped making video cards in 2003...and they might even be defunct now.

3dLabs has only Windows drivers for the Wildcat VP560 - no Linux drivers for this model.

Please don't kill the thread.

Hardware Drivers (under System | Administration) comes back with "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system." and lists nothing.
