I just bought a new laptop (Fujitsu Lifebook A6230 (http://www.shopfujitsu.com/www/products_notebooks.php?products/notebooks/tech_specs/a6230_ts)) and went to install Ubuntu 9.04. I found that there's no 3D acceleration support, and therefore tried installing the ATI Catalyst 9.7x64 drivers - I installed the .run from their website, created .debs from it as explained in this guide (http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Jaunty_Installation_Guide), and even installed the driver that jockey recommended. All of them have resulted in the same problem: after the system boots, instead of seeing the login screen, I get a few random pixels across the screen, and it just locks up. Ctrl+alt+backspace doesn't work, I can't get to a virtual console, or anything. I've had to reinstall Ubuntu to try again about 7 times so far. I've done it on Wubi too, and the exact same problem.

Same problem happens with Kubuntu.

I've heard before that ATI doesn't play nicely with Ubuntu, and I guess that's true. Can anyone offer any help?
