folders transfer in kde, but not their contents

when i do a big transfer from an external hard drive to my home folder, sometimes i get the folders without the contents. unfortunately, i don't always discover the shortcoming until after i've deleted things in the external. any ideas on how to rememdy the problem? or prevent it in the future?

Which file manager are you using? Dolphin, Konqueror, etc. Have you tried Thunar?
