View Full Version : [ubuntu] Resolution higher than 800x600? Jaunty Jackalope

We just recently got a new (used) computer and now have Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope (9.04) on it. In System.Display, the max resolution listed at 800x600. The monitor has operated at 1024x768 on a WinXP system before.

Here is a Screenshot of the Display menu:
http://rockingoutloud.com/ubuntu/Screenshot.png

And here is my current /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# Note that some configuration settings that could be done previously
# in this file, now are automatically configured by the server and settings
# here are ignored.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"

EndSection

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"

EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
Device "Configured Video Device"

EndSection

I have tried modifying the xorg.conf but was unsuccessful at doing so.

Any suggestions?

X's log file (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) should tell you why other resolutions are being rejected. If you want more information in there, you can put

Option "ModeDebug" "True"

in the Device section of xorg.conf.

Ok here is what's in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

Sorry if that's extremely long...
I did notice it says "Unable to estimate virtual size" and "vrefresh out of range" and "hsync out of range"...

What's the next step?

Looks like Xorg isnt recognising your monitor - might be worth filing a xorg bug report

also try the following (or something similar )in your xorg.conf

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
Option "DPMS"
HorizSync 31.5 - 37.9
VertRefresh 50 - 70

EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Virtual 1024 768
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
EndSection

might be worth trying with or without the virtual option

My only experience of nvidia stuff was back in hardy days - had to use the vendor hardware drivers - best to use envyng (from synaptic) (run from terminal envyng -t to install. You can then use nvidia-settings to play with the resolutions you want.

I tried the xorg.conf above and it did nothing. I also tried the envyng. It redid the xorg.conf. When I restarted, I actually had less options than when I started.

oh well. I've got some other questions below you may wish to try.

curious about the less options with the envng installed driver - was there an option in system - administration - hardware drivers to "activate" the restricted driver?
running nvidia-settings should have let you change all sorts of options such as colour depth

Remove the envng installed driver via envyng -t and restart with a clean xorg.conf

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Go back to trying the above example xorg.conf options

For the example xorg - did you have 3 resolutions to choose from?
Try forcing just the 1024x768 mode by just having the line
Modes "1024x768" instead of the other options. Did the xorg log change to indicate why 1024x768 wasn't being accepted?

does 1024x768 appear in your xrandr output?
Try changing the default colour depth

DefaultDepth 16
Depth 16
