Hey all,
I was in PC world today and they have a new stock of all-in-one desktops. I was intrigued by them and then i thought that it would be cool to build one myself. Has anyone done it?

Cheers,
Dave.

Soryy can you explain a "all-in-one"? Do you mean like an iMac?

you cant really build your own, not one company makes monitors with cabinate space to mount hardware.

HP did it, it's called TouchSmart or something like that. I heard that another brand (Acer or Lenovo, I forgot it) built some all-in-one PCs too.

Seems like Mac has to worry...

I'm afraid you'd have to be more specific with the concept of "all-in-one".

I've built a number of systems from the ground up, containing anything from the basics to the most technical. When I get my own house, I intend on wiring a server into the house's electricals so I can control everything from the comfort of my own phone :-D

Edit--Sorry there. If you want a system with a built-in monitor, those aren't too difficult to build. It typically takes special bracketing around the case. Alot of network-access computers are like that for space conerns.

Yh I've seen some good ones, I thought it might be a good project for a geek though. I might try and make one from wood or something. onbviously only the front but then with a metal backing with fan holes for air flow...?

You could just get an Acer Revo, best to wait till the dual core ones come out.

Or fabricate a bracket to secure a motherboard to the vesa mount holes on the back of a monitor....?

Why yes. I built a home server (http, file, torrent, ssh server) appliance. I am too cheap to buy one of those $200 small form factor cases so I built a plywood box that's no bigger than the mini-itx mobo and power supply. I've often thought about getting a solid-state PS and attaching the mobo and a smaller plywood case to the back of a monitor. Of course, I don't have any removable media, so that complicates things if you want a general purpose computer.

I remembered thinking that an all-in-one would be a cool thing to build, so I did some research on the internet:

This is a listing of suppliers:
http://www.alibaba.com/trade/search/3i1p5tyfchms/all_in_one_lcd_pc_tv.html

I haven't contacted any, so no idea how they work.

You could also build an all-in-one. This is a n extreme example. This would take serious talent: http://steampunkworkshop.com/victorian-all-one-pc

Having said that, the guy tells you how it's done, so you may be able to use some of his techniques.
