Maybe (probably) I'm just completely clueless, but is there a way to install ubuntu or xubunto or the netbook remix (which is why I labeled this under all variants) without having a CD drive or USB drive on my laptop?

I'm pretty much tired of Windows XP and I want to dive into Linux, and it seemed like Ubuntu would be good place to start. I really just use this laptop for surfing the web and basic stuff while I'm away on business (and I got it for free) so I feel pretty comfortable just messing around with this thing.

Thanks!!!

I'd have to say no because you need to either boot from a CD/DVD or an external flash drive when you hit F12 or whatever key to bring up the boot menu. I'm not sure of alternatives.

Not that I know of. You could get a external CD/DVD drive. But other than that I don't think there are any programs. Good Luck with whatever you end up doing :)

Hey, I may have found another way to do it. If you can manage to get the Live CD onto a SD card and (only if you have an SD card slot in the laptop) you could potentially get it. Im not sure how to get it on the SD card but I'll try to find it out for you.

You can install Ubuntu if you hook the it up to another computer by a LAN cable somehow.

There actually is a way. It's been a while since Ive done it, so Ill try to remember exactly what to do. First, download wubi and install *ubuntu. Then, log into ubuntu and download gparted. Run gparted and make a new partition. Ive forgotten what to do from there , so Ill try to dig up the tutorial.

Edit- Found it: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=438591

download the cd iso image onto the root directory of your hard drive that is running windows. then, install it from your hard drive. after you've partitioned your hard drive and installed it, you may delete your cd iso image from the windows partition.
