64 bit Jaunty, just updated the kernel to ?.?.14 as requested by the update manager.

Clicked "restart now"

And everything seemed to work just fine, until Firefox opened up with multiple tabs (I had left it open on the desktop when I clicked re-start).

Now I can't close or move the firefox window. The "restart" button on the panel is missing, and I cannot show the desktop (button at the left of the bottom taskbar). When I click the "show desktop" button, a message box appears "Your window manager does not support the show desktop button, or you are not running a window manager."

Is everything all right with the new kernel?

Well, the only problem I had was the wifi but I did the same thing I did when I updated the kernel some versions ago and had the same problem...just boot from a previous kernel from the grub, then restart and then boot with the new kernel.
That does the trick for me =/
