Did you install from CD?

What is the result of

fdisk -l

in terminal as root?

You should be able to do something with gparted to fix this without a reinstall.

Even if you can't expand your space, you can usually copy your install to a partition with more space and it should work

Where is sda2 physically located with respect to sda6?

I just wrote a guide on this problem.Expanding an Ubuntu System Partition (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1219270)

Your's is a bit different since it's not just a windows and / partition, but the principals are the same. You can't really run Ubuntu on a 2.3GB partition. Your options are to take space from antoher partition or reinstall. The guide also links to another thread that shows why the install ended up so small and how to prevent it from happening again if you choose that option.
