Hi,

Hope someone can help on this. Have Ubuntu 9.04 installed (no windows os installed). I have Sony Ericsson w850i phone with walkman and software cd for connection/music transfer that came with it. Can I install this software on Ubuntu easily:confused:

Any help would be much appreciated.

No. But you can plug your phone in with a USB cable and drag music to the appropriate folders and they will automatically be indexed by the phone. No need for the software. I have an w810i which is similar. I don't sync my phone so someone else will have to answer how to transfer phone numbers.

The software may run under WINE, but you will have to search the WINE website to see if others have had luck running it.

You can also use Bluetooth for transferring files. It's slower than USB, but if you aren't transferring much data it will save you the hassle of messing around with cables.

Bit of a long tome to respond to this, but did drag the music files via USB from PC to phone and it did work.

However 1 album = half a gig on the phones 1 gig memory card. So does anyone know how to reduce music files to a more compact size on the pc prior to drag and drop copy to the phones memory card without losing audio quality.

Any ideas and help much appreciated

I have a 4 GB card in mine. I use 192 kbps VBR mp3 encoding and that results in 5 to 6 MB per song. If you use 128 kbps encoding, that will save more space (3-4 MB per song).

You don't need to use WAV files which are huge as you have discovered.

There are several tools to convert CD's to mp3's.

The simple solution:

Use gnome sound converter. It's installed on the default Ubuntu distro. Set the settings to "mp3". The sony phone can't play *.ogg files.

The Sony software on Windows is absolute crap. Thankfully, these phones work well under linux with drag-and-drop. Try reflashing and you will gain even more functionality.

Compressing the music file (mp3), by nature, will have it's quality reduced. CD-quality bit-rate for mp3 is normally 128 kbps bitrate.
