IRC

You can just /ignore the jerks.

If you get kicked, only your ego gets bruised.

If you get bored, you can leave. No questions asked. No "one for the road." No "it'll only take a second."

You can /kill people you don't like and face no jail time.

On IRC you can tell people you are fine and they'll believe you.

No matter how obscure the question, someone on IRC will have the answer, even if it's the wrong one.

You don't have to be there to know what other people say about you.

You get to talk to (ro)bots.

You get to kill trolls without risking your neck.

You can whisper to someone and no one else can overhear.

It's like you have your own stenographer, allowing you to quote with precision EXACTLY what the other person said to you.

No matter how mad you are at someone, you can't punch them, nor they you.

You can just stop talking for a few hours and no one will care.

You get to have all the  you want.

People are so nice to you. They will almost ALWAYS share their tea or coffee with you.

Where else can you find the same amount of people who all like the same things as you?

Here's some Crisco. Maybe that will help.

Maybe if we kick you your ego will be bruised and shrink so you can get out?

RL (Real Life)

You can face up to the jerks and really do something about it.

If you get kicked, you get to kick back.

If you get bored, people will say "one for the road" or "it'll only take a second".

You are responsible for your actions, and so is everyone else.

On you can tell people you are fine and they ask why you aren't.

No matter how obscure the question, someone will have the answer, even if it's the wrong one... or they will tell you of a guy on IRC who will know the answer.

You don't have to know what other people say about you when you aren't there.

You don't get annoyed by (ro)bots.

You never need to even meet a troll.

You can make a theatrical whisper.

No one can quote you letter for letter on what you said or correct your spelling.

If someone really gets you mad, they'll see your face and hopefully be able to dodge your fist.

If you stop talking, they'll take you to the hospital.

Virtual  just doesn't cut the mustard.

To get the coffee offered to you, you need to travel 3000 miles.

You actually have to speak to people who have different interests than you, thereby expanding your knowledge and theirs in the process.

I've done it lots of times.

No, I don't.

Everything else is arguable, but probably true. :D

IRC used to be fun--a very very long time ago. I'm generalizing, but now it's only channels that have a 1000 people where everyone talks at once, or channels that have 1000 people and no one talks at all. Sure, sure. I've been to other servers. Probably not the one you're about to suggest? Save yourself the trouble...

You can't correct my spelling when I am speaking to you. ;)

No, I don't.

Well, perhaps you don't have to, but it's awfully hard NOT to. :D
