As far as I know, amazon has HP pavillion desktops with:

intel core 2 quad-core proc
nvidia geforce 9500 videocard
750gb hdd
8gb ram
6 usb 2.0 ports, hdmi port, 2 ps/2 ports, etc.

For under $800. Just can't find the exact link right now.

Just no floppy drive.
You would have to use 64-bit intrepid.

Watch out on tigerdirect.com . . . the star ratings on hardware seem more attuned to marketing than the quality of the product. Also, if ya call their operator's to order, more than likely they will try and sell you some useless software.

I bought a couple really useless pieces of software, one CA Internet Security Suite on their recommendation without looking it up on the Net . . . big mistake. Universally condemned as one of the worst. Anyway good luck.

If ya pick out a type of hardware ya like try and cross check it with other vendors and their ratings by purchasers. I use amazon.com a lot and there is usually some really good evaluations re products.

As far as hardware . . . I always get AMD CPU's . . . the bang for the buck is always better than intel . . . besides its better to keep the competition to Intel going to keep them honest. I got a really hot ATI card, the HD4890 on amazon.com. I have however seen some problems with ATI with Ubuntu . . . be careful.

'Course you should always compare your hardware choices with the hardware list that works with Ubuntu although if you use hardware that's been out for awhile I guess you should be okay . . . ie if ya want to have Ubuntu installed on your new box.

Getting a new box from amazon.com is a good idea. Those stats suggested would certainly suggest that the hardware would be supported by Ubuntu. I installed Ubuntu with absolutely no problem on

is about the same vintage it looks like.

Ya know . . . I just built a huge ******* rig . . . bleeding edge . . . and it really is hard and time consuming to make sure all the parts match and stuff. i would strongly suggest you do as Green_Grenade suggests and get a ready made box especially if ya want to get Ubuntu up and running fast which it sounds like ya want to do!

If you're running Ubuntu on it and not Windows-there is NO point in getting a Blu-Ray drive, save yourself $100 bucks right there.

There is no codec for BluRay that is licensed...and it is unlikely there ever will be for FOSS players like VLC, if Sony has their way. The only way at present to read BluRay in Linux, involves roughly 50 violations of US copyright law...and a LOT of terminal work. It isn't something that you can just throw in the drive and play by any stretch.

I wouldn't use blue-ray out of general principle: go all digital instead and download or use a service that can deliver hd digitally like netflix.

If you're just using it for movies, then I don't think you really need a $300 video card. Also, as a personal preference, if I'm hooking a computer up to a TV, I wouldn't want a giant tower next to my TV, so I would aim for a small form factor setup. Finally, newegg generally has lower overall prices than tigerdirect, although Tigerdirect often has some really good sales.
