This paticular PC is for my GF and id love to have her totally off of windows here at my house. Ive actually ran ubuntu 9.04 on this older PC. But it seemed to lag a bit and there were minor graphical issues. Ive considered U lite but id like some feedback. Its this or winblows. Id much rather have a ver of ubuntu on the machine.

What are the PC specs, If its not too old, you should be ably to get away with Ubuntu, just by removing some of the junk that you don't need.

If its a bit older than that you could try xubuntu. Its much lighter on resources.

Obviously the specs in your sig are not for your gf's pc. What are the specs?
If you were able to get ubuntu installed you could just install Xfce as a lightweight window manager to try it. It uses most of the Gnome apps but you may want to not use some of the larger ones like OpenOffice.

I have run full ubuntu on a PIII 600 with 128MB or ram and it ran crappy, install 1GB of ram, and it runs very close to acceptable performance. If you install xubuntu on that you should be good to go. Install more memory, and you could run normal Ubuntu without much of an issue.

Oh, and of course its going to be slow after using your 780i, I have a 790i with a QX9770 (overpriced) 8GB ddr3(1600), and dual 9600GT's. Everything seems slow now.

Not sure on the WUBI, but the xfce look is going to be close to that of what your used to, most of the "stuff" will be where you expect it to be.

Its not really hard to get lost with xfce.

And yes Xubuntu has a Wubi installer:)

Xubuntu (http://xubuntu.org) will run just fine on those specs.

If it has 512MB of RAM then standard Ubuntu 9.04 should run fine on there. If it's laggy then it's probably due to the Intel video in which case you might want to try 8.10 instead.

If it only has 256MB then upgrade the memory.:D

1.3GHZ in not that old
max the ram [512] and try OOTB ubuntu

I'm using it on a 933 P-III PCI/AGP as a media feed DVI/HDMI 1080p
smooth except when simultaneously loading updates and watching video
the on-board video in your specs is a limiting factor for it's 3D usefulness.

I have 98se on a 166mhz P-1 [used for a serial terminal]
what ever works

in some ways more recent versions are faster. i am pretty sure jaunty will boot faster than any previous version, on most machines.

but you will benefit from turning off some features. make sure desktop effects are turned off (system->preferences->appearance). remove things like bluez and non-latin fonts. reduce the time firefox keeps history (it used to keep 30day, but now does 90). install flashblock to stop webpages loading lots of flash ads. use abiword instead of openoffice.

if the machine still only has 256MB ram, then i strongly recommend upgrading that. going from 256 to 512 will make a big difference.

Max out the ram and try Xubuntu; that'd be my favorite choice if I were dealing with it. Even with just 256mb of ram it will run Xubuntu solidly.

Yeah, put in as much ram as you can fit, and get a decent'ish video card & it'll run fine.

Why not use something more AWESOME than XFCE. Like the AWESOME window manager!

PS: It's pretty AWESOME.

But it's a tiling window manager... If he wanted tiling, he'd be using Plan9. :P

Fluxbox + basic Ubuntu install = ftw
