too much ram

Ubuntu 9.04 - installed on IBM 700mz - 256 Ram - windows drag and leave tails,windows not showing everthing . Took out 1/2 of ram - left 128mb and everthing works great! Jacket says 256mb ram min. but won't work. I had XP PRO on this computer with 256 ram and it was ok. :confused:

I have an older machine with 64Mb RAM, and Ubuntu doesn't work on it - would your trick of taking out some RAM help me get it working?
