disabling balloon

Hi, I was looking for the section software to put this question but could not find it, is there a way to disable system messages that appear when some updates are available or when network manager establishes connection and so on, I hate them when on windows but there was a system to disable them, now on ubuntu does it exist a way?

System > Administration > Update Manager > Settings > Updates

Network Manager just remove the icon from the panel.

But I don't want to remove the icon from the panel, I use NetworkManager to connect to internet, isn't there a configuration for NM to avoid balloon? It is not the most important thing in my life simply I hate it
